My body aches in new ways. My muscles still twitch hours after our time in the caves, and all I can think about is when we can do it again.

I catch myself putting shredded mozzarella in the pantry and laugh. A genuine laugh. And the vibration plays on my soreness, sending throbbing awareness through me. I’m coiled tight, my body both exhausted and craving more all at the same time.

The peal of the phone makes me jump and rips me out of the hundredth replay of Jackson inside me, stretching me, his teeth bared, his jaw flexing with tension as he growls with his release. The sounds are so gritty and primal—so real—and just the sexiest damn thing I’ve heard that I have to wonder what it would have been like if we’d been in an actual bed.

“Hello.”

“Hey,” Frannie says breathlessly over the line. “I picked up the kids from the youth center and had every intention of bringing Skye home to you like we planned, but they’re both begging me for a sleepover.”

“They hated each other this morning,” I point out. Skye settled into her friendship with Max and at some point, it resembled more of a sibling bond than anything else. Basically, Max felt the need to challenge Skye in everything and Skye kept muttering, “Boys are dumb and Max is the dumbest.”

So articulate, my Skye. But this could be a good thing because I don’t know if I’ll ever give her a brother or sister. I can’t even guarantee that I’ll be around to raise her.

Not when I know I’ll have to face her father who’d embraced a new tactic or two to manipulate the situation.

“Yup, which is why I’m highly suspicious of how well they’re getting along now. I’ve gotta be honest, I really want to borrow your girl to distract my son for a night so that husband of mine can service me. I’ve been preheated since the roller rink and if we don’t get a minute together soon, I’m going to have to take matters into my own hands. Personally, I’d rather he do all the work.”

“I don’t know. I—”

“I’ll protect her, Savannah. With my life. Nothing will happen to her here. I promise you. Well, other than she might come home with some questions about the noises coming from my room,” Frannie says, immediately smoothing over her promise with humor.

But after what happened at Rockabilly’s, we both know Colton will show his face. I narrowly avoided serious trouble and only because Jackson put his life on the line for mine. For Skye’s.

Next time, I might not be so lucky. The logical part of me is screaming for me to go to the police. To explain everything and see if they can help. Usually he just uses conversation dripping with charisma to sway people. One layer at a time, slowly building up the barrier, keeping me isolated and dependent.

Of course here, he had to contend with my history, my ongoing reputation, and that this town only has good things to say about me.
